I expected Robertson to be considered more seriously for a roster spot this year.

Guess he didn't show enough at camp to stick around?

There's still plenty of time for him to bounce back though.

Also says he's only played 31 games as a pro due to injury. Might as well give him top minutes and special teams for the Marlies instead of spot play here and there on the 3rd line.

I didn't watch too much preseason. But he didn't really impress me at all. He just turned 20 - looks like he needs more time in the AHL.

from last thread:

I don't really believe in the whole inspirational speech between periods thing either.

But I do think the Captain can set the tone in a season. Which is why I want JT to tell the group that there isn't going to be any whining about the coaches being too hard on players this year.

I don't care if they win a game 7-0. If the coaches see issues they want to address, I want the captain pushing players to listen.
- Leafs43

the captain (leader) needs to lead by example on and off the ice.

if the other team starts banging bodies, ze needs to meet or exceed this level of intensity so that the rest of the team (pack) will rise to the occasion and impose their will on the other team instead of skating around with alligator arms

if they need some goals to catch up and win, the captain should have the experience and will to know how to get them as a team and not necessarily by zimself

perhaps more importantly, the captain (leader) can’t be a doggone hypocrite
The old adage, “do as i say not as i do” hasn’t ever held water with intelligent individuals

ergo, a captain should hit the weightpile year round

ze should not be an inveterate drunk while telling everyone else on the team to make bed check so they can be at their best the next day

ze should also be personable/sociable so that ze can deal with the press and defend ze’s teammates in an honest and truthful manner

certainly these principles apply to the coaches and management

Management considers them cup contenders

Therefore they won’t put a bunch of rookies in the lineup

Meh when rookies are good enough, you play them.

What about Liljegren? Ain't he making the team too?

Not true whatsoever.

Talent doesn’t equal knowledge and you need both to make a contender’s lineup

I agree, or Sandin would not have been sent down last year. The Cap plays a role with Rookies

Yes well being good enough doesn't mean it's all about talent, it's mostly about being more useful to the team than whatever other option is out there.

So when a rookie shows enough so that's how you feel, you play them.

Yeah, I guess managing that also has an impact in the decision.

After his pre-season, I would be surprised if Liljegren is not on the NHL roster for game 1 of the regular season..

I mean, he's spent time with Muzzin and Muzzin is our best defenseman..

If they felt Robertson was ready they wouldn’t have signed as many guys this summer.

That simply proves they didn’t feel that way or those contracts wouldn’t have happened

Disagree

They can be more talented but not as useful

Skill is not everything whatsoever

Dreamer

He’s getting more practice with the team cause he’ll be the one called up after an injury. He’ll likely be sent down before Saturday.

No I’m saying he is more talented than some of the bottom six guys but not nearly as wise

And I'm saying being more talented doesn't mean he's more useful, which is really what matters.

So I disagree that we are disagreeing!

He has showed enough for me to give him a shot in the NHL.

He isnt at the stage anymore where he NEEDS to develop and play 22 mins a night on the PP/PK in the A.

He deserves a shot imo.

Then why are you surprised they aren’t going with two rookies?

That alone should tell you they don’t have adequate knowledge (just being a rookie)

I'm interested to see how the Leafs navigate this.

They don't have the room for 13 forwards and 7 defenseman. Something has to give.

Barring a trade - I think Lilly doesn't make the team, just because he and Sandin are the only waiver exempt players.

If Liljegren shows he is ready they have an opportunity to trade Dermott and can accumulate more cap for the TDL. They are 100% considering this option.

They will likely want to get a real top 6 forward at the TDL this year.

So who would you drop to have him be the 7th d man? The leafs only have $80K in cap space

And defence will be:

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Sandin Dermott

None of those guys would be waiver exempt so who do you drop to give Liljegren a chance?

Also there’s no damn way in hell the leafs will play two rookie defensemen when they consider themselves cup contenders
